Berger Penetrating Liquid

A clear penetrating solvent-based preparation for binding chalky, powdery surfaces that cannot be thoroughly cleaned.

A penetrating sealer with specially selected solvents to assist penetration into unstable surfaces and provide a tough, durable finish on chalky masonry surfaces and wood, to provide sound adhesion for topcoats. Berger Penetrating Liquid is made for both interior and exterior use and will bind loose and powdery materials prior to the application of emulsion paint on wood and other surfaces which are not alkaline.

Surface preparation:

  • Remove chalk residue using a stiff bristle or wire brush
  • Power wash and rinse thoroughly
  • Check for residual chalk after the surface after has dried
  • If chalk is still present, apply Berger Penetrating Liquid
  • Berger Penetrating Liquid will penetrate at least 1/8th of an inch into the surface

 

Application Procedure:

  • Apply Berger Penetrating Liquid by brush, roller or spray.
  • Take care to cover the entire chalky surface as Berger Penetrating Liquid is a clear coating
  • Coverage is 4-9 m²
  • Clean equipment with Berger Reducer #2

 

Tips: Failure to treat chalking surfaces before applying primers or topcoats will lead to a loss of adhesion, no matter how durable the topcoats are.

Solve Potential Paint Problems

1What is the white powder that comes off the wall when I rub it with my hands?

Chalking is the formation of a white, dusty powder on the paint film, and is actually a natural way for paint to breakdown as it weathers.

What are the possible causes?

  • Long-term exposure of paint film to the elements
  • Use of low-quality interior paint on an exterior surface
  • Over thinning the paint
  • Application of a thin paint film
  • Failure to prime and seal the surface before applying topcoat
  • Painting on a pre-existing chalky surface

What is the solution?

  • Remove chalk residue using a stiff bristle or wire brush
  • Wash with soap and water, and rinse thoroughly by hose or power washer
  • Allow surface to dry and check for any remaining chalk by running a hand over the surface
  • If noticeable chalk is still present, apply Berger Alkali Sealer or Berger Penetrating Liquid
  • If no chalk is present, repaint as normal
  • Repaint with a premium quality exterior coating
