Bleach and water solution slows, but does not kill fungus and algae. Berger Sterilizing Solution solves this problem.

Berger Sterilizing Solution is a solution specially formulated to chemically destroy the Caribbean species of fungi and algae that may be remaining on a surface after wire-brushing or power-washing to remove the fungus. Pre-treating the surface is important to ensure maximum durability of the topcoat and is necessary to complete before repainting.

Surface preparation:

  • Abrasively remove all fungus from wall with wire or very stiff brush
  • Power-washing is also a good option
  • Wash area with detergent solution to remove fungus and dust particles

 

Application Procedure:

  • Berger Sterilizing Solution should be applied by brush or swab
  • Allow it to remain on the surface for at least 30 minutes
  • Wash surface thoroughly
  • Allow surface to dry before top-coating
  • Once dry, apply the emulsion of your choice
  • Berger recommends Berger WeatherProof for long term protection against fungus and algae
  • If the area is prone to fungal attach, re-coat with Berger Chlorinated Rubber

 

Tips: Pre-treating is an extra step in the painting process, but well worth the money in allowing you to maximise the durability of your paint job.

Solve Potential Paint Problems

1How do I get rid of unsightly mildew on my walls?

Mildew is both an interior and an exterior problem found in damp areas receiving little or no sunlight. It appears as black, grey, green, or brown spots on any surface.

What are the possible causes?

  • Failure to treat existing mildew before painting
  • Using lower quality paints with little or no biocide
  • Failing to prime bare wood before painting
  • Painting over a substrate or coating from which mildew has not been removed

What is the solution?

  • Treat mildew with Berger Sterilizing Solution
  • Remove mildew by pressure washing the surface
  • Allow solution to remain on surface for at least 1 hour
  • Rinse thoroughly with water and allow surface to dry before painting
  • Wear protective eyewear, protective clothing, and waterproof gloves
  • To protect against re-growth use premium quality paint
  • Clean high-moisture areas at 6 month intervals to slow re-growth
